Main Features:

The Vikram Lander is engineered with precision within "six sigma" limits, along with an innovative "salvage mode" to guarantee a historical landing.

Thorough stress examination and the presence of two onboard computers contribute to a 99.9% assurance of the forthcoming moon touchdown.

Detailed specifications of the lander and a focus on native technology highlight India's strides in space exploration technology.

ISRO stands at the threshold of yet another milestone with Chandrayaan 3's Vikram lander. The mission introduces a novel "salvage mode," equipping it to ensure a safe landing "even in challenging scenarios." Key elements that bolster confidence in the mission's successful touchdown.

Learning from your failure

Following the unsuccessful soft landing of Chandrayaan 2 due to algorithm and control issues, substantial enhancements have been implemented to ensure the success of Chandrayaan-3. Aerospace Scientist Professor Radhakant Padhi from IISc Bengaluru emphasized the enhanced robustness of Vikram Lander's legs.

ISRO Chairman S Somanath has announced that India's third lunar mission Vikram Lander is capable of achieving a gentle lunar surface landing on August 23, even in the absence of sensor functionality and two of its engines.

The statement came during a tail on “Chandrayaan-3: Bharat’s Pride Space Mission”, which was hosted by the non-profit organization “Disha Bharat”.

The statement quoted by PTI:

“If everything fails, if all the sensors fail, nothing works, still it (Vikram) will make a landing. That’s how it has been designed—provided that the propulsion system works well”

That's an assertive and confident statement, without a doubt! Additionally, the propulsion module of Chandrayaan 3 has managed to conserve over 150 kilograms of fuel, surpassing initial estimates. This efficiency boost could extend the module's operational lifespan from months to years. Another remarkable accomplishment, underscoring ISRO's meticulous planning and strategic decisions.

The Approach of "Six Sigma" Design: Chandrayaan 3's construction adheres to the principles of the "six sigma" philosophy, leading to a more robust framework. The focus on creating a lander with the ability to withstand the most challenging situations marks a significant shift from the previous mission.

Vikram Lander Payload: Chandrayaan 3's mission objectives encompass a secure and gentle lunar touchdown, rover exploration, and the execution of scientific investigations. Within the lander, payloads like Laser & RF-based Altimeters, Laser Doppler Velocimeter, and Lander Hazard Detection & Avoidance Cameras contribute to improved guidance and stability. Furthermore, the Vikram Lander boasts comprehensive features such as a power generation capacity of 738W, a bi-propellant propulsion system, and an array of sensors and actuators designed to manage every stage of the landing process.

Thorough Stress Testing: Professor Padhi indicated that Chandrayaan 3 has undergone extensive stress trials, with ISRO addressing all anticipated uncertainties. These preparations encompass recreating lunar conditions and integrating hazard detection systems to optimize landing sites.

Redundant On-board Computers: Differing from Chandrayaan-2, the Vikram lander within Chandrayaan 3 is outfitted with two onboard computers, boosting dependability and performance. This design alteration underscores a 99.9% level of confidence in Vikram Lander's operational efficacy.

Former ISRO Director K Sivan emphasized that every aspect of Chandrayaan-3 is domestically sourced. Lessons from previous mission data have prompted corrective actions and technological advancements.

A New Era of ISRO

Through its fresh design approach, cutting-edge technologies, and meticulous evaluations, Chandrayaan-3 by ISRO serves as evidence of India's technological advancement. The nation anticipates a momentous occasion as the lander is poised to make contact with the Moon's South Polar area, representing a notable achievement in space exploration.

Keep in mind, the live broadcast will be accessible via ISRO's official website, YouTube channel, and Facebook live stream on August 23, 5:20 PM Onwards!
